29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): One or more methods of machine guarding was not provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks: a) On or about July 7, 2020 a belt sander in the maintenance shop area of Building 2 was found to be missing guarding at the bottom ingoing nip point. This exposed employees to hand, arm, and eye injuries associated with the sanding process. b) On or about July 13, 2020 a Heidenreich and Harbeck Lathe in Building 1 was found to be missing a guard over the lead screw. This exposed employees to hand and arm injuries associated with the operation of this machine. c) On or about July 13, 2020 a horizontal band saw located in the Tooling Department of Building 1 was not provided with a guard for the unused portion of the blade. This exposed employees to hand injuries from operating. d) On or about July 13, 2020 a Okuma LB15 Lathe was found to have an interlock that allowed the doors to open approximately 4 1/2 inches. This opening was too wide and exposed employees to hand and arm injuries if they reached in during operation. |
